This region stretches from the southern shore of the James near Hog Island to the mouth of the river, then eastward from Willoughby Spit along the extreme southern shore of the Chesapeake to Cape Henry, where the Bay meets the Atlantic. From there, the region boundary turns southward along the Atlantic shoreline to the North Carolina border. The region is characterized by marked contrasts. The upper section along the south shore of the James River is primarily rural. Eastern Hampton Roads is urban and densely populated. Lodging and dining facilities are sparse in rural areas south of the James but easy to find north of the James and in South Hampton Roads. Summer weekends are usually crowded and traffic backups are common on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. The Monitor-Merrimac Bridge, I 664, provides visitors with an alternative route to escape frequent summer weekend traffic backups. This region is about 1.5 to 2 hours driving time from Richmond and 3 hours from Washington, DC. The area offers angling variety including inshore, offshore, pier and surf fishing.
